Stem Cell Therapies: Excitement Builds but Challenges Remain
With weak pharmaceutical pipelines and demand increasing for tailored medical approaches, adult and embryonic stem cell therapies are gaining ground as a therapeutic focus. Numerous companies are now active in this research and some observers estimate that the stem cell market could reach between $8.5 and $10 billion within the next ten years.

Expert touts N.J.'s "substantive" stem cell efforts
New Jersey's stem cell research efforts, including the approval of a $270 million project to construct five stem cell research centers, underline the "substantive" contribution of the state to the field, stem cell pioneer John Gearhart said Monday. Gearhart, director of the Stem Cell Program at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Maryland, supports a $450 million bond issue up for public vote Nov. 6 that would provide funding to stem cell researchers and their programs.

About two-dozen representatives from state and federal governments were in Cambridge last week as part of a fledgling campaign to improve collaboration among stem cell scientists by identifying barriers to sharing research material across state lines. Governor urges Mass. Legislature to OK $1B biotech plan
Massachusetts Gov. New Jersey Voters Reject Plan to Borrow $450 Million for Stem Cell Research

TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey voters on Tuesday rejected borrowing $450 million to pay for stem cell research grants in the state for 10 years.
The rejection was a defeat for Democratic Gov. Jon S. Corzine, who campaigned heavily for the measure. He argued the money would help find cures for conditions such as spinal cord injuries, Parkinson's disease, sickle cell anemia and multiple sclerosis while also luring leading scientists and research firms to the state.
