Professor Sir Martin Evans Nobel Prize Award Ceremony

Sir Martin Evans, Professor of Mammalian Genetics at Cardiff University will receive the 2007 Nobel
Prize for Medicine at the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony and Royal Banquet on December 10 in Stockholm.

Sir Martin was one of three winners this year for “a series of ground-breaking discoveries
concerning embryonic stem cells and DNA recombination in mammals.”

Described as “the father of stem cell research”, Sir Martin was the first scientist to identify
embryonic stem cells, which can be adapted for a wide variety of medical purposes. His discoveries
are now being applied in virtually all areas of biomedicine, and in treating a wide range of
diseases including cystic fibrosis and cancer.

In the week preceding the ceremony, Sir Martin will join other Nobel Prize winners in Sweden for a
celebratory programme of events, and he will deliver a public lecture about his work which can be
viewed via a live web cast from the Nobel Foundation at http://nobelprize.org/

On 10 December, Sir Martin and his colleagues Professor Mario Capecchi of the University of Utah
and Professor Oliver Smithies of the University of North Carolina, will receive the Nobel Prize
Medal, Nobel Prize Diploma and document confirming the Nobel Prize award from King Carl XVI Gustaf
of Sweden at a Royal Banquet held in honour of this year’s winners.

In conjunction with the Award ceremony, Cardiff University is making available to the media a
