Russell McSpadden - All Headline News News Writer

Des Moines, IA (AHN) - According to a 10-year study conducted by researchers at Iowa State University women who divorce show signs of poorer health than those who remain married.

The study, which looked at the health of divorced and continuously married rural women, found that the act of divorce created no immediate effects on physical health but did affect the women's mental health. According to Fred Lorenz, coauthor of the study, "Ten years later, those effects on mental health led to effects in physical health."

Data was gathered from just over 400 rural Iowa women, each interviewed in the early 1990s, and then again in 2001. All the women were mothers of adolescent children. Approximately one-fourth of the women were recently divorced when the study began.

In interviews taken shortly after divorce, the divorced women reported a higher percentage of cases of psychological distress than their married counterparts. No differences in physical health were recorded.

However, after a decade, the divorced women reported 37 percent more physical illnesses than the married women surveyed.

Lorenz linked the increased physical illness of divorcees with the several different psychological stresses associated with break-ups, such as single parent issues, low self-esteem, financial problems, and work related issues. Lorenz noted that rural women in particular have poor job prospects.
