Women who want to find out if they have a genetic predisposition to developing familial breast or ovary cancers can now do so in Japan.
Six medical facilities have started offering the service after the National Cancer Center and other institutions found that a genetic testing method used in the United States produced viable results.
The testing is intended to help women with a high risk of contracting such cancers and to encourage them to undergo regular checkups for early diagnosis.
The testing was set up with the proviso that it is only be done at medical facilities that offer counselling, including psychological support. That is because some patients may be terrified to learn they are predisposed to develop cancer.
Cancer which typically occurs among family members, such as parents, brothers and sisters, is called a familial tumor.
Of such familial tumors, breast and ovary cancers are sometimes caused by mutation of genes called BRCA1 and BRCA2.
Studies in the United States found that 50 to 80 percent of those with such gene mutations will develop breast cancer, while 10 to 30 percent of them will develop ovary cancer.
A total of 1 million people have taken genetic testing in the United States to check genes in their blood.
To see if the testing also worked for Japanese women, the National Cancer Center and four other hospitals conducted clinical studies from 2003.
They checked BRCA genes of 135 people who were suspected to have familial breast or ovary cancers.
Gene mutation was found for 27 percent of the subjects, or 36 people. The result was almost identical to trends observed in the United States.
Kokichi Sugano, a doctor at the Tochigi Cancer Center, and other experts concluded that the gene test was valid for Japanese, too.
Those who wish to be tested are required to provide data to the medical facility about family members who have histories of breast and ovary cancers.
If the cancers are deemed likely to be a familial tumor, an individual can undergo genetic testing for 380,000 yen.
Falco Biosystems Ltd., a Kyoto-based clinical testing company, partnered with the U.S. company that holds the patent for the gene test and will provide the service to medical facilities which are capable of genetic counselling.
So far, six medical facilities in the Kanto, Tohoku and Chubu regions have contracted with the company.

Chieko Tamura, an associate professor at Ochanomizu University, said it was vital that medical facilities have the resources to provide counselling as some women may be unable to face the fact they are at grave risk of developing cancer.
"There are only a few doctors and counsellors within the country that can give genetic counselling on cancer," said Tamura, who has genetic counselling experience in both the United States and Japan.
"A system that can support women who take the tests must be established, too," she said.(IHT/Asahi: August 21,2007) 本人认领此文翻译,如48小时后仍未提交翻译,则由其他战友自由认领。 Genetic cancer screening for women

建立测试时做出了规定,这种检测只能在那些提供辅导服务,包括心理帮助的医疗机构进行。这是因为一些患者可能在获悉易患癌症后手足无措。
