Biotech group not endorsing for prez, but seeks more in FDA budget

The world’s largest biotechnology organization isn’t endorsing a candidate for president.

But when that next U.S. leader is elected, the Biotechnology Industry Organization’s members will call on him to significantly increase the federal Food and Drug Administration’s budget, so it can speed up the review process for cutting-edge medicines now waiting in the pipeline for approval.

“Our industry is led by some very, very brilliant scientists,” said Jim Greenwood, president and chief executive of BIO. “But it is critical that the FDA have personnel available to review and understand (their work.)”

Greenwood’s comments were made yesterday in Washington, D.C., during a media briefing on biotech-related legislation.

Joshua Boger, chairman of BIO’s board and CEO of Cambridge-based Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc., also participated in the hour-long briefing.

Both men acknowledged that the American public wants health care to be less expensive.

But they said that, from the biotechnology industry’s point of view, there’s not a lot of difference between Democratic presidential nominee U.S. Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain, the Republican’s pick for president.

“Both said pretty good things about biotechnology, and both support embryonic stem cell research,” Greenwood said, “and both want to move from an ideological to a science-based policy, and both support more funding for the FDA.

“Both support stronger action on global warming and view it as human induced, and both support the development of cellulose ethanol.

“We are not endorsing a candidate because there’s not such a great difference between them,” he said.

Instead, biotech leaders will press the next president to allocate more money to the FDA to help speed up the drug-review process.

“The bottom line is we have to help the next administration achieve health-care reform,” Boger said.

Part of that reform is letting drug makers create and then sell drugs that reduce suffering and cure diseases, he said. “It is the most straightforward way to reduce medical costs,” he said. Biotech group not endorsing for prez, but seeks more in FDA budget
