Vein camera helps achieve super accurate injection attempts into vein
07 Oct 2004

A new camera, created at The University of Tennessee, USA, gives the health professional an enhanced image of the veins under the skin, and facilitates super accurate injection attempts. The camera, called a Vein Contrast Enhancer (VCE), provides a real time video of the patient's veins with the use of near infra red.

A projector pinpoints exactly where on the patient's skin the needle should go to make sure the desired vein is hit.

You can read about this new device in the journal The New Scientist.

Any vein within 8mm under the skin can be located to within 0.06mm of their correct position, said Dr Herbert Zeman, the inventor. Dr. Zeman is a biomedical engineer.

Dr Zeman said "(With infrared) Fat and tissue look light, veins and blood look dark."

The Vein Contrast Enhancer feeds information it picks up into a PC which maps everything out onto a bright green background (in real time). The PC then sends the image to a projector which pinpoints on the skin where the veins are (in bright green). All the health professional has to do is hit the green target.

Dr Zeman said this device should be especially useful for people who work with children and babies. Children and babies have small veins and lots of puppy fat - this makes it more difficult to find a vein.
