Breastfeeding Rate Continues to Climb

The percentage of infants who breastfeed has jumped significantly in the past 15 years or so, as public health officials have pushed to get the word out that mother’s milk is the ideal food for most babies.

This graph, published yesterday by the CDC, tells the story:

That “HP 2010 target” in the upper right of the graph refers to Healthy People 2010, a set of national public health goals. The ‘05-’06 rate, about 77%, surpassed the 2010 goal of 75%. Indeed, the rate is the highest since the CDC began surveying in the 1980s, the Associated Press reports.

The breastfeeding rate among black infants has climbed especially sharply, from 36% for those born in 1993-1994 to 65% for those born in 2005-2006.

But demographic differences persist, the report notes. Breastfeeding rates were lowest among women who are unmarried, poor, rural, younger than 20, and have a high school education or less, the AP notes.
