SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Six new samples of toxic E. coli bacteria matching the strain in tainted spinach that killed three Americans and sickened 200 have been found on a California ranch, a state health official said on Thursday.
Investigators have now discovered a total of nine samples of the matching E. coli 0157:H7 strain on the ranch where the spinach was raised, Kevin Reilly, a deputy director with the California Department of Health Services, told reporters during a telephone conference call.
The ranch is in the area of Monterey and San Benito counties, among California's most productive agricultural regions and top producers of fresh, bagged spinach.
Investigators have focused on four undisclosed ranches in the area as potential sources of the tainted raw spinach responsible for an E. Coli outbreak across 26 U.S. states and one Canadian province.

Four of the new matching samples have been traced to cattle on the same ranch and the other two new matching samples were traced to a creek and a wild pig killed on the property, Reilly said.
Wild pigs present at the ranch could be spreading the toxic E. coli strain but exactly how it contaminated a spinach field on the ranch remains unknown, Reilly said.
"We are continuing to collect specimens in the field," Reilly said, adding that state and U.S. health officials consider the E. coli outbreak over.
"All evidence points to this outbreak having concluded," he said.
The outbreak in September prompted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to warn consumers to avoid all fresh spinach. Groceries and restaurants across the country removed spinach from sale.
Jack Guzewich, director of emergency Coordination and response for the FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, said on the conference call the agency has no reason to believe the toxic E. Coli strain will be traced to spinach fields beyond those on the four California ranches under investigation.
Escherichia coli is a usually harmless bacteria normally resident in the guts of animals. Researchers identified the pathogenic E. coli 0157:H7 strain in 1982.
The strain causes an estimated 73,000 cases of infection and 60 deaths in the United States each year. Most illness has been associated with undercooked, contaminated ground beef. But if contaminated manure gets into irrigation water or is used in fertilizer, it can get onto fresh produce or the water supply.
