Women pass on health risks to daughters

WOMEN who smoke during pregnancy may be condemning their daughters to obesity and reproductive health problems in adult life.

New research has found daughters of smokers have bigger waists and are more prone to reproductive health problems than daughters of non-smokers.
The study of more than 700 Adelaide women born from 1973-75 was presented yesterday at the 25th annual scientific meeting of the Fertility Society of Australia.

Of 717 women, 154 were born to mothers who smoked in pregnancy.

"It is already well understood that children of women who smoke in pregnancy tend to be substantially lighter at birth," said Adelaide epidemiologist Dr Michael Davies.

"This was confirmed in our study along with the fact that the daughters of smokers tended to have smaller chest circumferences and there were indications of growth restriction in the womb.

"However, the daughters of smokers seemed to put on more body weight -- around 6kg in adulthood -- and they had bigger waists than their counterparts." They were also more likely to have irregular menstrual cycles.

"Our study showed that smoking by the daughter was unrelated to the irregularity in weight and reproductive wellbeing, so it appears to be related to maternal smoking in particular," Dr Davies said.

A separate study presented at the Sydney meeting found more than half of women who bleed during pregnancy go on to miscarry -- but many wrongly blame themselves for the loss.

About one in five prospective mothers suffers bleeding after normal conception, and more than 50 per cent miscarry.

Dr Devora Lieberman, director of the miscarriage management program at Sydney IVF, said there was nothing a woman could do to cause the bleeding.

"But you'll find women blame themselves and think 'maybe it was my stress levels or maybe it was having sex, or lifting something'," she said.

"There's very little awareness out there about it and unfortunately many doctors and nurses treat this situation as routine without understanding the emotional impact."

The meeting also heard that couples should make lifestyle changes to increase fertility.

Conference organiser Prof Geoff Driscoll said it was important the public understood that lifestyle affected fertility.

Starting a family younger, controlling obesity, exercising regularly and not smoking all improve chances of conceiving.

"It has long been recognised that any deviation from ideal body weight can adversely affect fertility in both males and females," Prof Driscoll said.
