NEW DELHI, Dec. 30. - Spurred by the positive results of studies on the impact of homoeopathic system on people infected with HIV/AIDS, scientists are now carrying out elaborate, large-scale testing of homoeopathic medicines in the treatment of the dreaded disease.
Two projects have been undertaken under the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy, a body which is responsible for research in homoeopathy in the country. The council also plans to undertake a third study on the impact of homoeopathic medicines, when given in combination with allopathic anti-AIDS drugs, on AIDS patients.
This study will be undertaken in association with the Safdarjung hospital. The two-year project has been cleared by the ethical committee of the hospital and is expected to begin next year, Prof. Chaturbhuja Nayak, director of CCRH, told The Statesman. The trial at Safdarjung Hospital would involve 100 patients.
In the first study, five homoeopathic preparations ~ cyclosporine, amyleum nitrosum, cocaine muriaticum, azathioprine and cortisone ~ are being tried on people carrying the HIV (Not AIDS patients) virus. The study would span about three years and a total of 150 HIV positive people would be enrolled. The study would be conducted in CCRH’s Mumbai centre and at the new centre coming up in Noida.
Dr Nayak said HIV positive people with CD4 count of over 250 would be enrolled for the trial. (CD4 count of the blood indicates the immunity level of an individual. HIV positive people, whose CD4 count falls below 200, are given anti-AIDS drugs).
The council is also undertaking a four-year multi-centric trial in which the homoeopathic system would be assessed for treatment of AIDS.
This study, to be carried out in Mumbai, Chennai, Imphal, Noida and Gudivada in Andhra Pradesh, would enrol 600 HIV-infected people and treat them on an individual basis depending on their symptoms.
