【medical-news】澳HIV诊断率达10年最高
A new report from the University of New South Wales shows the rate of HIV cases being diagnosed in Australia is at the highest point in a decade.
The university has been releasing annual reports on the diagnosis of sexually transmitted disease for the past 10 years.
Professor John Kaldor says the latest report shows the number of new HIV cases in Australia has increased by 40 per cent since 2000.
"That's of concern but I should also point out that we're still nowhere near the number of diagnoses per year that we were seeing in the mid-1980s when HIV was at its height in terms of the trends in this country," he said.
"I guess it still is of concern that it has been a steady increase over the past few years."
Federal Health Minister Tony Abbott says he has asked his Advisory Council to consider how it can reduce the infection rate.
"Any potentially deadly disease is a big problem and ... we've got to try to make sure that the spread of this disease is eliminated if possible and minimised if not possible," he said.
