NEW DELHI: Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dik*** on Sunday said the number of dengue-affected patients was decreasing day by day with rise in level of awareness among people and called upon people to curb mosquito breeding. ``There is no need for panic and the situation is under control,'' she declared.
Speaking after a visit to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital at Hari Nagar in West Delhi, where she met a number of dengue patients, Ms Dik*** said: ``There is enough blood and platelets to meet the demand. Only a maximum of 10 per cent of all dengue cases need blood transfusion.''
The Chief Minister said that Delhi Government hospitals were equipped to deal with dengue and have been catering to the needs of patients coming from the entire National Capital Region.
Ms Dik***, who was accompanied by Health Minister Yoganand Shastri, and Principal Secretary Health D.S. Negi, met several patients and expressed satisfaction over the handling of the situation by doctors and other staff members of the hospital. She said most of the patients were stable and had been kept for observation.
The picture at the premier institute All India Institute of Medical Sciences was not as rosy. With a large number of new patients being added every day, AIIMS, which has been taking the bulk of the admissions, has now restricted the intake. Only emergency patients are being admitted in the institute now. Member of Resident Doctors' Association Anil Sharma said: ``Only those patients who need emergency medical attention are being admitted.'' Claiming that the institute was facing a severe manpower and resource crunch, he said, ``dengue patients are pouring in from all over the country in AIIMS but the institute does not have infrastructure to deal with this situation.''
Demanding that the Union Health Ministry should also ensure that other city hospitals shoulder the burden, he demanded that dengue should be declared an epidemic as it would help in getting more resources at a time when AIIMS was running short of blood and platelets.
As for Municipal Corporation of Delhi, its officials said that of the 886 patients admitted with dengue in the Capital thus far, 538 were from Delhi itself while the remaining were from other States. They said the worst affected areas were Central Zone (74 cases), Najafgarh (70 cases) and Shahdara (N) which reported 68 cases.

卫生部长Yoganand Shastri以及秘书长D.S. Negi陪同Sheila一起接见了几位登革热的病人，并且对医院医护人员的处理情况表示满意。她认为大部分病人的情况比较稳定但还需要留院多观察一段时间。
然而首都的全印度医学科学院（印度唯一一间被选定为治疗登革热的国营医院）的景象却并非如此乐观。这家医院已收入了大量的登革热病人，但随着每天不断有大量新的病人出现，医院现已限制只有急诊病人才能收入院。住院医生学会的成员Anil Sharma说：“只有那些需要急诊处理的病人才能被收入院，登革人病人从全国各地涌来，但医院却没有相应的基础设施能满足这种需要。”这表明医院正面临着人力和资源的不足。
他呼吁国家卫生部门应该保证城内其他的医院能够分担一些病人，而且登革热病人应该公告其传染性，这样，有利于在全印度医学科学院血液和血小板都短缺的时候获得更多的资源。
