Published October 10, 2006 01:44 am - Parents of school-aged children often complain of their hectic days and evening, shuttling their kids to organized sports, after-school clubs, summer camps and countless other events.

Parents of school-aged children often complain of their hectic days and evening, shuttling their kids to organized sports, after-school clubs, summer camps and countless other events.

But, they say, at least the added enrichment for their kids is good — and it keeps them out of trouble.

Turns out the overload of planned activities isn’t just hard on the parents, it’s not good for kids, either.

The American Academy of Pediatrics says the heavy structure in kids’ lives is depriving them of something vital — unstructured free time. The academy notes that creative development in children is spurred by down-time, when kids can dream and explore and must find ways to fill time on their own. Unorganized time also helps kids develop problem-solving and social skills.

The drive by parents to immerse even young children in all manner of activities comes in part from pressure they feel to have their kids succeed in high school and college.

It turns out the pressure society and parents put on young kids to do everything to get into a good college doesn’t just hurt children, it hurts teenagers who carry the burden to succeed into high school and college.

In a related study, the academy found an increasing rate of depression, anxiety and stress in teens’ lives as they try to juggle school, advanced placement classes, SAT-prep classes, extracurricular activities, volunteering, jobs and social lives.

This isn’t what well-intentioned parents had in mind.

Colleges could help change the trends by not leaning so heavily on SAT scores and loads of extracurricular activities when admitting students. Some colleges are doing better at looking deeper at other attributes of potential students, through personal interviews and other techniques.

Parents can do their parts by simply bringing more balance. Give children more playtime and let teens know that getting the perfect GPA and top SAT score isn’t going to be their key to happiness in life.

But, they say, at least the added enrichment for their kids is good — and it keeps them out of trouble.
Turns out the overload of planned activities isn’t just hard on the parents, it’s not good for kids, either.

The drive by parents to immerse even young children in all manner of activities comes in part from pressure they feel to have their kids succeed in high school and college.
