MERRIAM, Kan. -- Americans have been warned to watch out for trans fats because of the strong link to heart disease. Now, a study shows it might also be linked to infertility in women.

While there is no definitive reason for the link, doctors said it makes sense because trans fats lead to increased plaque in blood vessels, KMBC's Kelly Eckerman reported.

"There may be increased plaque in blood vessels leading to the ovaries and the uterus. If you decrease bloodflow, you decrease the function of those organs," Dr. Milton McNichol said.

Through blood tests, Dee Malone found out she was insulin resistent and not likely to conceive. Following McNichols advice, Malone made a big change in her eating habits. Less than a year later, everything is different.

"You are what you eat. You watch what you eat and you get not only long-term fertility benefits, you get long-term health benefits and I'm seeing that," Malone said.

"You want to limit trans fat in your diet. Certainly be mindful of the things you're eating because they might be impacting your chances of conceiving," McNichol said.

The study links trans fats to infertility in women, suggesting limiting trans fats to less than 2 percent of your diet, Eckerman reported.

Milton McNichol
Through blood tests, Dee Malone found out she was insulin resistent and not likely to conceive. Following McNichols advice, Malone made a big change in her eating habits. Less than a year later, everything is different.
"You are what you eat. You watch what you eat and you get not only long-term fertility benefits, you get long-term health benefits and I'm seeing that," Malone said.
"You want to limit trans fat in your diet. Certainly be mindful of the things you're eating because they might be impacting your chances of conceiving," McNichol said.
