The Right Time for Sex?

by Leonard DeRogatis, Ph.D.

Some years ago, a Johns Hopkins scientist discovered that human beings experience predictable changes in biological functioning throughout the 24-hour (circadian) cycle of the day.

Metabolic rates, hormone production, energy levels, and many other functions are affected. One predictable change all of us experience is in testosterone, the production of which peaks in the morning hours.

Yet we all have different times of day when we feel we are at our best. Some of us are morning people, others night owls, and we seem to know intuitively which type we are.

These differences can significantly affect the quality of our sex lives. Younger adults are more able to stretch the limits of our circadian rhythms, but that flexibility decreases as we age.

A man who is sexually raring to go when he first awakens will often be confused and frustrated by a partner who behaves like a zombie in the morning.

Later that evening, it may well be that the same woman is energetic and ready to have sex only to find that her partner is too tired or already asleep. In some couples the mismatch involves a woman who's a morning person and a man who's a night owl.

Often, these alterations in energy cycles are ascribed to external events: "I haven't had my coffee yet" or "I had a bear of a day at the office." In fact, they are more likely due to differences in biorhythms. One reason people often report better sex when they go on vacation is that without the constraints of their daily routines, they are again free to do a little stretching of their circadian rhythms.

We cannot easily change our internal clock - it comes with the package. But we can become more aware of how our rhythms relate to our partner's and try to compensate for any significant discrepancies. Sex can often get better as a result.
