MORE women and girls than men continue to contract HIV, the virus that causes Aids due to among other things gender inequality, ministry of Women and Child Development has said.

The ministry has since asked organizations in the HIV/Aids fight to mainstream gender issues as one way of reducing the further spread of the pandemic amongst women and girls.

According to National Aids Commission (NAC) report of 2003, out of 760,000 infected adults of ages 15-49 in 2003, 58 percent were women.

"A lot of indicators available justify that HIV is a gender issue that necessitates gender analysis and mainstreaming as a strategy to prevent infection and mitigation," said National Project Coordinator for Women, Girls and HIV/Aids program in the ministry of women and child development, Abson Mpunga.

He said the spread was high amongst girls and women because they were not empowered to negotiate for safer sex saying they usually depended much on men to make decision.

"Women can not on their own control their reproductive health but depend on men, this has left many contracting the virus," noted Mpunga.

He said this in Mzuzu at the opening of a four-day long gender and HIV/Aids mainstreaming and analysis course for district social welfare officers, District Aids coordinators drawn from north and central regions.

Mpunga said as a ministry they were working out on how best they could empower women and girls to be able to negotiate for safer sex to prevent themselves from contracting the virus.

UNAIDS 2004 report indicates that women and girls made about 57 percent of all people infected in the sub-Sahara region.

Mpunga also said cases of rape on women and girls have also promoted the spread of the pandemic.

"This is mainly to due to ignorance on their part on where to report. We would like to ensure that women have access to legal instruments and know where to report," he said.

The course was aimed at equipping participants with tools for integrating gender into planning, monitoring and evaluation about HIV/Aids programs.

It was also aimed at creating gender HIV/Aids training team at the district level in their respective district.

"A lot of indicators available justify that HIV is a gender issue that necessitates gender analysis and mainstreaming as a strategy to
prevent infection and mitigation," said National Project Coordinator for Women, Girls and HIV/Aids program in the ministry of women and child development, Abson Mpunga.
He said the spread was high amongst girls and women because they were not empowered to negotiate for safer sex saying they usually depended much on men to make decision.
"Women can not on their own control their reproductive health but depend on men, this has left many contracting the virus," noted Mpunga.
