Study: Cottonseed May Become Food Source

U.S. scientists have reduced the toxic compound gossypol from cottonseed to a safe level, possibly leading the way to development of a new food source.

"In terms of human nutrition, it has a lot of potential," plant biotechnologist Keerti Rathore of the College Station, Texas, Agricultural Experiment Station told the Houston Business Journal.

Rathore said the altered cottonseed meets World Health Organization and U.S. Food and Drug Administration standards for food consumption, potentially making it a new, high-protein food. It might also spur development of an agribusiness spinoff in the state, Rathore said.

The research, conducted by Rathore and a team of scientists from Texas A&M University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, appears in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
