Last Updated: 2007-06-18 19:01:09 -0400 (Reuters Health)
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Daily coffee intake is inversely associated with the risk of primary late onset blepharospasm, a common type of late-onset dystonia, new research suggests.
By contrast, there was no significant evidence to support earlier reports of an anti-blepharospasm effect for cigarette smoking, according to a paper in the June 19th online issue of the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry.
The results stem from a case control study that included 166 patients with primary blepharospasm, 228 control patients with primary hemifacial spasm, and 187 population control subjects.
After adjusting for age, sex, disease duration, and other potential confounders, prior coffee intake was associated with a 56% to 63% reduced risk of blepharospasm, lead author Dr. Giovanni Defazio, from the University of Bari in Italy, and colleagues note. Moreover, as average daily coffee intake rose, the risk of dropped further.
Coffee intake was also tied to a delay in blepharospasm onset. For each additional cup consumed per day, the age of blepharospasm onset increased by 1.7 years.
As noted, cigarette smoking had no significant impact on blepharospasm risk and did not affect the age at disease onset.
Caffeine is the coffee ingredient most likely to be responsible for the effects seen, the report indicates. However, the authors note that this could not be examined in the study, which was based in Italy. A control group for this factor was unavailable, since relatively few people in this country drink decaffeinated coffee.
The researchers speculate that caffeine may protect against blepharospasm by blocking adenosine receptors, a mechanism that has also been proposed for its possible preventative effects on Parkinson's disease.
