【medical-news】大肠杆菌的流行在美国引起恐慌

E. coli outbreak spreads in latest food scare in the U.S.

Another four new cases of E. coli have cropped up in Pennsylvania and New Jersey prompting the Taco Bell restaurant chain to close another nine outlets in Philadelphia as a precaution.
The total number of reported cases of E. Coli in this latest outbreak in the United States has now risen to 66 which makes it one of the largest outbreaks to hit the northeast of the country in recent times.

Taco Bell has apparently removed green onions from all it's U.S. restaurants after some samples tested positive for the bacteria in preliminary tests.

The company have only just reopened eight restaurants in New Jersey and Long Island, N.Y., that had been closed for a day after being linked to the outbreak and one outlet in South Plainfield, N.J., remains closed as workers sanitize all equipment.

Medical officials in New Jersey and New York are working with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to try to pinpoint the cause of the outbreak.

Investigators suspect a warehouse in Burlington, New Jersey may be the culprit as most of the products used come from there.

The McLane company warehouse delivers food to as many as 1,100 restaurants, including Taco Bell and other fast-food restaurants in the Northeast.

At present health officials say it is unclear whether the new cases are linked to those in New Jersey and New York.

The State Health Department says that three of the people who were sickened with E. coli at the end of November had recently eaten at a Taco Bell, two were hospitalized but then later released and another nine remain in hospital in New York and New Jersey.

Among them two children who have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can permanently damage the kidneys - an 11-year-old boy already has kidney damage and is in a stable condition and a 5-year-old girl.

There have been 25 confirmed cases of E. coli in New Jersey, and many more listed as probable infections, among people who ate at Taco Bell during the last two weeks of November and Long Island has reported at least 25 cases.

Health authorities believe the central food distributor is most likely to be at the root of the infection rather than improper handling as so many restaurants have been implicated.

Taco Bell has destroyed all existing food in it's restaurants and has completely cleaned and re-sanitized each restaurant and all utensils and cooking equipment.

The E. coli bacterium is found in ground beef and the CDC recommends cooking all ground beef and hamburger meat thoroughly and not eating ground beef which is still pink.

As a rule E. coli is found in the faeces of humans and livestock and most infections are linked to undercooked meat, but it is also found in sprouts, asparagus and spinach as in the last outbreak of E. coli which was from spinach.

This latest outbreak is just one of many food-safety problems to hit the United States in recent months and follows on from an outbreak of salmonella in September which sickened 183 people in 21 states and two in Canada which was traced to tomatoes in restaurants.

Then there was the outbreak of E. coli from contaminated fresh, packaged spinach that killed three people and sickened more than 200 people in 26 states along with one Canadian. 本人已认领该文编译,48小时后若未提交译文,请其他战友自由认领。 E. coli outbreak spreads in latest food scare in the U.S.
