The US Centres for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention have warned that a strain of influenza circulating in the US this winter is resistant to oseltamivir (Tamiflu™.
In their report, doctors have been informed that 49 out of 50 influenza A H1N1 samples that have been tested have shown resistance compared to 11% of samples tested last year. The resistant strain has been observed mostly in Hawaii, Massachusetts and Texas.
The CDC have advised US doctors to continue to prescribe oseltamivir to treat the influenza A H3N2 and influenza B strains and to prescribe zanamivir (Relenza™ or oseltamivir plus rimantadine in cases of suspected infection with the H1N1 strain. However the CDC has warned that zanamivir is not approved for patient under seven years old and patients with asthma.
In response to this warning, Roche says that the CDC advisory is based on "a small sample in a limited number of states and that oseltamivir is showing good activity against other circulating viruses.
