It's too early to start chugging red wine - or to buy stock in Napa Valley - but researchers have found something in grape seed that seems to inhibit colorectal cancer.
Mice fed the grape seed were 44 percent less likely to have their colorectal tumors grow to an advanced stage, said Rajesh Agarwal, professor of pharmacy at the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center.

The substance worked just as well on cell cultures in the lab, according to the study published this week in Clinical Cancer Research.

Grape seed somehow increases the presence of an important protein, Cip1/p21, that freezes the rapid cancer cell cycle and can even push the cancer cell to self-destruct.

"We are not suggesting that people run out and buy and use grape seed extract," Agarwal said. "That could be dangerous, since so little is known about doses and side effects."

Scientists have known that the skin and seeds of grapes are a rich source of proanthocyanidins, an antioxidant that removes harmful free oxygen radicals from cells.

Agarwal and his colleagues earlier were the first to demonstrate the usefulness of grape seed in stemming other cancers.

Grape juice and red wine also are known to be heart-healthy, but in moderation, of course.

Agarwal exposed two different human colon carcinoma cells to the grape seed extract. He found that the benefits kept increasing over time and with bigger doses.

The number of live cells went down by 92 percent in one cell line that got the highest dosage over the longest time, which was two days.

Delving deeper, the researchers found that the longer the grape seed was used, the more cancer cells were arrested before they actively duplicated their DNA. DNA duplication has to happen before cells can multiply in numbers.
