Hepatitis A outbreak identified in Toronto

At least 20 cases of hepatitis A have been identified in a west end Toronto neighbourhood with most of the sufferers being students at a middle school.

All 20 people have been treated for the infection within the last seven weeks, sparking a round of immunizations for more than 900 people in the Martingrove Road and Finch Avenue West area.

The outbreak was identified in late October at Elmbank Middle School. Most of the people infected attend the school. But many parents only heard about the outbreak on Monday morning.

"I have a daughter that's in Grade 7, and I found out about it this morning on the news," one worried mother told CTV's Galit Solomon outside the school.

"Hepatitis is a disease and we don't want the children to get it."

Three vaccination clinics have occurred at Elmbank, with a fourth planned for Saturday.

Officials with Toronto Public Health are still trying to determine the origins of the outbreak, but add that there is no risk to the general public.

The health authority believes the cluster of hepatitis A cases are travel-related, meaning the virus was brought to Canada from another part of the world.

A letter sent to parents by the health authority said the school is not the source of the outbreak.

Hepatitis A is a temporary viral infection of the liver. Symptoms may include:

Fever;
Loss of appetite;
Tiredness;
Nausea;
Vomiting; and
Jaundice (a yellowing of the skin or eyes).

Symptoms can be more severe for adults, but death from hepatitis A is very rare.

The virus can be transmitted by coming in contact with fecal matter.

Health officials say it is important to always wash hands with soap and warm water after using the toilet, changing a diaper and before and after eating or preparing food.

They also advise people to wash uncooked food thoroughly before use, especially fruits, vegetables and shellfish.

Finally, health officials say all food should be thoroughly cooked before being consumed.
