Concern Grows About Health Of First-Ever Canadian Sextuplets
Monday January 8, 2007

We don't the names of the parents and it's anyone's guess if even they've decided on the monikers for their kids.

But a still unknown couple in Vancouver has a lot of work to do, after becoming the proud parents of this country's first ever sextuplets.

Authorities refused to confirm the birth of six children at B.C. Women's Hospital on Sunday, but it now seems clear the kids are here.

The infants - four boys and two girls - were delivered by Caesarian section and weighed only about 1.8 pounds each at birth.

It's not clear if fertility drugs were a factor in this case, but it's a likely scenario. The chances of giving birth to such a large brood are estimated to be 4.7 billion to one.

But their future remains uncertain.

Some infertility experts worry about their health and development.

Dr. Timothy Rowe of the University of B.C. fears at least some of the children could be blind or have underdeveloped lungs because they were all born prematurely.

Others are amazed they've even survived at all.

"For sextuplets to get to 25 weeks is -- it is a good start," explains Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre obstetrician Dr. Jon Barrett. "Many babies as sextuplets will be lost before then."

He also worries about the potential for birth defects.

"Cerebral palsy, major organ defects, blindness, deafness, learning disabilities. The risks are very significant at these very early gestations."

While some children of multiple births survive and thrive, others die. In the case of the McCaughey septuplets from Iowa, two of the seven were born with cerebral palsy.

But Dr. Barrett has high hopes that technology and modern medicine can make the impossible happen in this latest case.

"Neonatal intensive care unit is really excellent and getting much better," he suggests. "Certainly there is that chance, and that's what I guess we all pray for."

The hospital contends it can't reveal much about their special guests because of privacy concerns and the refusal of the parents to tell the media about their suddenly large family.

Still, there's real concern for the kids, given the history of so many others who died in the first days or weeks of their lives.
