NEW YORK (Reuters Health) May 16 - Treatment of scabies with benzyl benzoate lotion or permethrin in pregnancy is safe, at least in the second and third trimesters, according to findings published in the May issue of the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

"Scabies is a common parasitic infection globally, particularly in the tropics," Dr. R. McGready, of Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand, and colleagues write. Topical treatments recommended in pregnancy include permethrin and benzyl benzoate lotion (BBL), but "the evidence of their safety tends to be anecdotal."

To investigate, the researchers conducted a retrospective study involving refugee and migrant women attending antenatal clinics on the Thai-Burmese border between 1993 and 2006. The team reviewed antenatal records to identify women who were treated with either BBL or permethrin. Each case of scabies was matched with four scabies-free control subjects.
