New claims suggest that a low calorie diet could be the prescription for a longer life. This idea was suggested by a group of scientists at the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center who have been testing such a diet in a group of monkeys at the Center since 1989. The results have amazed all and sundry.

As a part of the study some of the monkeys were given 30 per cent less calories and the diet was balanced with other nutrients like vitamins and minerals. The rest of the monkeys were well fed. The monkeys who were part of the test have now all grown to their old age and the difference between the two groups is more than apparent.

The monkeys on the low-calorie diet are more energetic, their appearance has more life in it and most of them do not show any age related disease. The well fed group on the other hand is showing their age all over themselves. They have wrinkles on their face, are fat, lack energy and most of them have at least one age related disease.

The results seem to concur with a long touted principle that reducing the calorie intake could retard aging. This same result has also been seen in other laboratory animals like mice, worm and the like. But when it comes to human beings, things do not seem that simple. While doctors do see the effect of a low calorie diet on the health of a person there are no conclusive proofs as to the extent of their effect.

Statistics show that a lower calorie intake affects those parts of our cellular structure that are responsible for old age diseases like Alzheimer's disease. Study has also been done on small groups of low calorie dieters. The results have shown that these dieters had low levels of bad cholesterol, high levels of good cholesterol, zero artery blockage and low blood pressures. The researchers came to the conclusion that less calories led to a healthier heart and an overall protection against age related diseases. Other studies of similar nature have shown lower levels of insulin, lower body temperatures and less damaged chromosomes; all of which point toward a longer life.

Despite all of these results experts are divided in their opinion. Some say that a calorie restricted diet could extend an average life span by only 2 per cent. Also the effects of a lifelong low calorie diet on a human have never been studied in depth as yet.
