A 62-year-old child psychiatrist has become the oldest woman in Britain to have a baby.
Dr Patricia Rashbrook of Lewes in East Sussex gave birth by caesarean section to a bouncing baby boy on July 5, beating the record set by Welsh hill farmer Liz Buttle in 1997. Buttle was 60 when she had her son Joseph.
Both women are spring chickens in comparison to Adriana Iliescu. Last January the Romanian gave birth to her daughter Eliza Maria at the age of 66. She is thought to be the oldest woman in the world to have a baby.
Rashbrook was treated by Italian fertility specialist Severino Antinori. Antinori made headlines when he helped 63-year-old Rosana Della Cortes become a mother in 1994.
Rashbrook and her 60-year-old husband John Farrant had to travel all the way to the Romania to receive care from the Italian doctor.
Critics have branded the new parents as selfish and irresponsible. That's not surprising, Rashbrook will be 82 when her son celebrates his 20th birthday. How will she cope with his difficult teenage years?
Sadly I can not help wondering what it will be like for the adolescent to be faced with his parents' mortality so early in life. Dr Rashbrook is a child psychiatrist so it must be assumed that she knows what she is doing.
Dr Rashbrook defended herself to British tabloid The Daily Mail, saying that she felt, "it was the right thing to do." She added.
"We are both extremely healthy and I have always looked and felt very young, but nevertheless we have younger friends with children who have agreed to act as surrogate parents should anything happen to us...What is important in parenting is not how old you are, but whether you are meeting all the child's needs and we are very confident about doing that."
Rashbrook has been widely criticized in the media. Her opponents might have had more sympathy for her actions if she had never had a child, but she has three adult offspring from her first marriage. Some may ask why she could not content herself with grandchildren.
Nevertheless, it is interesting to note that many men in their 60s and older become new fathers without attracting global media attention. This seems more than a little unfair on men because it suggests that the father's role is less important.
The new baby, who has been nicknamed JJ and has yet to receive an official name, is John Farrant's first child.
This helps to explain Rashbrook's motives and, in a way, shows that love is as important for older couples as it is for youngsters.
