news原文
A desirable characteristic of future 'intelligent' nanomaterials is the ability to respond to a stimulus by performing a mechanical action. This ability already exists in nature: certain proteins can undergo a conformational change in response to an appropriate stimulus. In Nature Materials, Sylvia Daunert and colleagues report a new material with a stimulus-responsive action mechanism tethered to a biological recognition element. The material comprises a hydrogel that swells in a three-stage process. Swelling is triggered by both ligand sensing and the shape change of genetically engineered proteins. Potential applications include microfluidics and miniaturized drug-delivery systems.
