Experimental ultrasound method could mean fewer breast biopsies

An experimental ultrasound technique could accurately tell the difference between harmless and malignant lumps in women's breasts, a small study found.

If the technique, called elastrography, holds up in larger studies, it could change the way doctors use biopsies to determine whether women have breast cancer.

The findings were reported at the Radiological Society of North America's annual meeting in Chicago this week.

In a biopsy, doctors use a needle or scalpel to remove breast cells that are examined under a microscope. The technique can be costly and uncomfortable and it may take days or weeks to get the results.

In about eight out of 10 instances, biopsies find lumps that are harmless.

"There's a lot of anxiety, a lot of stress, a lot of fear involved" with biopsies, said Susan Brown, manager of health education for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in Dallas.

"And there's the cost of leaving work to make a second appointment. If this can be done instead of a biopsy, there would be a real cost reduction."

In the study, the ultrasound technique correctly identified 17 out of 17 cancerous tumours and 105 out of 106 benign ones.

Jonathan Ophir of the University of Texas Medical School in Houston, who pioneered the technique, described it as an extension of one of the oldest tools in medicine: palpation. In palpation, a doctor feels the shape and firmness of tissue.

While traditional ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create a picture of what is going on it the body, elastrography goes a step further by gauging movement.

The device collects data before and after the compression or movement of breast tissue. Stiff tissues show up as darker areas on the resulting images.

"It's like finding a marble in Jell-O," said Dr. Richard Barr, a professor of radiology at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, who reported the findings at the meeting. Experimental ultrasound method could mean fewer breast biopsies
