On the Business End of Doctor Training
Posted by Jacob Goldstein
Terrifying but true: There’s a first time every doctor does any medical procedure. Fortunately, med schools have gotten better about hiring healthy human guinea pigs — known as “standardized patients” — so that med students can practice on people who aren’t actually sick.
Still, being on the business end of a med student’s first exam can be harrowing, according to this dispatch from a Slate reporter. For $15 an hour, the reporter underwent 23 practice physicals from second-year Georgetown med students who had never before done a complete exam in the absence of an attending physician. “Some were shaking so violently when they approached me with their otoscopes—the pointed device for looking in the ear—that I feared an imminent lobotomy,” she writes.
Another couldn’t seem to get a blood pressure reading. “The panic in his eyes seemed to say, ‘She appears to be alive, yet she has no vital signs,’” the reporter writes. In fact, the reporter’s blood was flowing, but the student was using the wrong side of the stethoscope to listen to her arm. Her blood pressure varied from 87/60 to 125/90, according to readings from different students.
Not all of the students were clumsy. One doctor-to-be walked into the room with confidence and moved gracefully through all 45 steps of the exam. “After she listened to my abdomen and proclaimed, ‘Good bowel sounds,’” the reporter writes, “I felt gratified I was able to please her.” July 5, 2007, 10:33 am
