Drinking hydrogenated water might curb the deterioration of cognitive functions, a research team has found.
The results of experiments conducted on mice by the team, led by Prof. Shigeo Ota of Nippon Medical School, might pave the way for the prevention and treatment of dementia.
They were published in the online version of Neuropsychopharmacology, the official publication of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology.
It is known that stress can cause a deterioration in memory faculties.
In the experiments, the team placed mice under duress through such methods as confining them in a restricted space and withholding food.
The researchers observed the difference between having 10 mice imbibing water with a high volume of dissolved hydrogen and 10 drinking normal water. The mice were studied using three methods over a six-week period.
The team found mice that drank the hydrogenated water maintained noticeably better memory functions than those that did not--almost the same as mice that had not been placed under duress. A similar trend was found in the propagation capacity of neural stem cells in the hippocampus, a part of the forebrain that coordinates memory, for the mice that drank hydrogenated water.
Last year, the team confirmed that hydrogen removes active oxygen from water and can halve brain damage from strokes.
Dementia is believed to be an illness in which active oxygen and other substances degenerate nerve cells. "Substances formed by active oxygen built up in the hippocampi of mice that did not drink hydrogenated water," Ota said.
