Great-grandmother Mavis Burton-Pye, 67, said she would speak to a lawyer about the circumstances surrounding the death of her husband Leslie, 74, at the James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston, Norfolk.
Mrs Burton-Pye said her husband, a retired road worker from Acle, Norfolk, died a week ago after becoming infected with Clostridium difficile (C Diff) at the James Paget in February.
She said Mr Burton-Pye would not have gone into the hospital for a blood transfusion had they been aware that the deadly bug was present.
Hospital managers announced the problem at a media conference on Friday afternoon when they revealed that a vicious strain of C Diff had caused or been a factor in the deaths of 17 patients since December.
Another five patients had undergone major bowel surgery after being struck down by the bug and 11 more had been treated.
"I don't know why they didn't tell people before. It seems all wrong," said Mrs Burton-Pye.
"Leslie was a diabetic. He went in for a blood transfusion about five weeks ago and picked this bug up while he was there. He died on Monday. I knew it was no ordinary bug he'd picked up. It was terrible. You can't imagine. The doctor wrote this funny word on the death certificate last week which didn't mean anything to me.
"But I didn't know that people had been dying because of this bug since December until I saw it on the news on Friday. If we'd known when he went into hospital five weeks ago he wouldn't have gone in. He could have had more iron tablets or something."
She added: "I'm going to see my solicitor to see what I can do. There must be something we can do. I feel really bitter about it."
