Like a plot from a Hollywood spy thriller, American vice president Dick Cheney could be killed by computer hackers, researchers have claimed.
Mr Cheney has an erratic heart beat. He and thousands like him in Britain and the US have a little device permanently implanted under the skin to shock the heart back into regular action when it falters.
More sophisticated than a pacemaker, the gadget – called an ICD or implantable cardiac defibrillator – is like a miniature, automatic version of the electric shock equipment used in emergencies. But now a team of researchers from Harvard University have discovered that computer hackers can gain wireless access to the tiny onboard computer chip that controls most ICDs.
And while they said they had no reported cases so far of "malicious attack," they warned it is possible.
That raises the extraordinary possibility of a political assassin - or even a business or love rival - making use of a new way of disposing of an enemy.
Working in their laboratory, the researchers were able to reprogramme the chip to make a patient's heart beat wildly, turn it off, and even make the ICD deliver electric shocks powerful enough to kill if it was in a real patient.
They were able to gain access because each ICD contains a tiny radio to allow doctors to monitor and adjust it without surgery once it is in the patient. [6} As well as interfering with the ICD, the scientists used its radio signal as a "gateway" into the patient's medical records on the doctor's computer.
About 3,000 British patients have the devices. Campaigners say 5,000 Britons a year would benefit from them but don't get one because of the £20,000 cost. The researchers said they did not wish to be alarmist. For the moment a hacker would need £15,000-worth of computer equipment and be within a couple of feet of the ICD to interfere with its signal.
But lead researcher Dr William Maisel of Harvard Medical School warned that hackers will be able to work atlong range - possibly even miles away – as technology improves.
