Flu shot slightly raises risk of Guillain-Barre

New research suggests a very small increased risk of developing the potentially disabling neurological disorder Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) after receiving the flu vaccine.
However, the Canadian researchers behind the study are quick to warn that in patients at high risk of complications from the flu, the benefits of vaccination far outweigh the risk.
"This is a disease that occurs sporadically, maybe about 10 people per million," the study's lead author, Dr. David Juurlink, told CTV News' Avis Favaro.
"If you vaccinated all of those million people maybe one or two additional cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome would develop as a result of the vaccine."
Juurlink compared the slight risk of getting GBS from the vaccine to being struck by lightning.
The study tracked adults who received the vaccine during the months of October and November between April 1, 1992 and March 31, 2004.
"We found that receipt of the flu vaccine was associated with an increased risk with developing the Guillain-Barré Syndrome in roughly the two months after vaccination," said Juurlink.
GBS can cause paralysis and in some cases can even be deadly.
"It starts typically as a tingling in the lower extremities, muscle weakness develops and for some people it becomes a mild illness that gets better after a few weeks," said Juurlink. "But there are certain variants that can become paralyzing the muscles of respiration, leaving people debilitated on breathing machines."
Despite the risks, Juurlink said if people stop taking the flu vaccine the consequences would be much more calamitous.
"Millions of Canadians get influenza ever year and by vaccinating people we can prevent hundreds of thousands of cases of influenza, thousands of hospital admissions and probably thousands of deaths," he said.
"For me it's a no-brainer, I've got my flu vaccine and I get my patients to get theirs as well."
In a second analysis, the same researchers found no significant increase in GBS hospital admissions after Ontario implemented its universal influenza immunization program in 2000.
Despite all the research, doctors are unable to identify who is most likely to develop GBS.
"Because we don't know exactly why it happens we can't identify the person that's most at risk," said Juurlink.
