November 17, 2006 11:00pm
AUSTRALIAN women over 30 are for the first time now more likely to terminate a pregnancy than teenagers, new abortion statistics show.
Fertility experts say the trend, captured in an extensive South Australian study of abortion patterns over the past decade, directly reflects new procreation patterns showing women are doing all they can to delay motherhood.
The Flinders University research unveiled at an international women's health conference in Sydney yesterday found that the number of women aged 30 to 50 having abortions climbed from 25 per cent of all abortions to 33 per cent between July 1996 and July 2006.
In the same period the proportion of women under 20 having abortions shrunk from 25 per cent to 18 per cent, the lowest on record in the last decade.
The research found that women aged in their 20s remained the most likely to abort, consistently making up about half of all terminations.
Researcher Wendy Abigail analysed data from almost 7000 surgical abortions at two Adelaide clinics with rare historic records to get the strongest indication yet of emerging trends in age and contraception choices.
She said the drop in teenage abortions may be because of improvement in long-acting contraception, wider availability of the morning-after pill and even the Federal Government's baby bonus.
Ms Abigail said changes in the older age demographic were clearer, reflecting the dramatic push to delay parenthood for the sake of money or careers seen in Australia and overseas.
"Women are making more reproductive decisions in their 30s and 40s, and now more than ever it seems, whether it's to have a child or terminate one," she said.
Infertility expert Professor Michael Chapman said the abortion trend was obviously linked to the push to delay parenthood.
"Termination is just another way of putting it off," he said.

In the same period the proportion of women under 20 having abortions shrunk from 25 per cent to 18 per cent, the lowest on record in the last decade.

Wendy Abigail
She said the drop in teenage abortions may be because of improvement in long-acting contraception, wider availability of the morning-after pill and even the Federal Government's baby bonus.
Ms Abigail said changes in the older age demographic were clearer, reflecting the dramatic push to delay parenthood for the sake of money or careers seen in Australia and overseas.
