More Americans Trust Democrats On U.S. Health Reform, Poll Finds
Americans are split on whether they can count on Democrats to improve U.S. health care, a new poll shows, with 45% saying they trust Democrats and 44% saying they do not. By comparison, a solid majority of 63% don't trust Republican to lead health reform, compared with 25% saying they do.
The Wall Street Journal Online/Harris Interactive poll was conducted March 6-10, after presidential primaries in Ohio and Texas determined Sen. John McCain would be the Republican presidential nominee and Sen. Hillary Clinton clinched two significant wins as the Democratic candidate after Sen. Barack Obama's recent winning streak.

Health Blog Question of the Day: Which candidate or party do you trust to reform health care? What part of the system needs the most attention? The percentage of those who trust in Democrats to reform U.S. health care has risen since September 2007, the poll shows, while the percentage who don't trust Republicans has grown. Among the presidential candidates, 44% of those polled trust Sen. Clinton to improve health care, 40% trust Sen. Obama and 30% trust Sen. McCain. Thirteen percent said they trust Ralph Nader, who joined the race as an Independent candidate.
Nearly a third of respondents to the online survey of 2,897 U.S. adults feel the top health-care issue the presidential candidates should address is providing coverage for the uninsured, while 29% think the candidates should focus on slowing the inflation of costs of medical care. Covering the uninsured is much more important among Democrats (45%), while slowing the inflation of medical costs is seen as the top issue by Republicans (38%) and Independents (33%).
The poll also found that 60% believe it is the government's duty to ensure all Americans have adequate health-care coverage, down slightly from 65% in September 2007. And 59% believe the U.S. health-care system could be improved by creating an insurance program that is not linked to individuals' employers.
